Report: Spurs express interest in midfielder with £53m release clause

The print edition of Record (10/10/22 as relayed by Sport Witness) has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have expressed an interest in signing Sporting Lisbon midfielder Manuel Ugarte.

Ugarte arrived at Sporting in the summer of 2021 and was a bit-part player last season but the midfielder has now become a key star for the club following some high-profile departures in the summer, including Joao Palhinha, who joined Fulham.

The 21-year-old has put in several important performances for the Portuguese giants this season, including in the 2-0 win over Tottenham in the Champions League last month.

Record claim that Ugarte’s performances have caught the attention of Spurs and Paris Saint-Germain, who have both allegedly enquired about the players’ availability.

The report asserts that Sporting are keen to tie down the midfielder to a new contract and that a new deal will not just see the Uruguayan international get a pay rise but could also see his release clause increased from its current value of €60m (£52.6m) to €80m (£70.1m).

An enquiry from Tottenham about Ugarte does not necessarily signify concrete interest. It is worth keeping in mind that the 21-year-old’s value could increase dramatically by January if he performs well for Uruguay in the World Cup starting next month.
