Report: Spurs eyeing move for £52m-rated Portuguese centre-back

Fabrizio Romano has revealed in his column on CaughtOffisde that Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a move for Sporting Lisbon centre-back Goncalo Inacio.

Inacio has emerged as one of the most consistent centre-backs in the Primeira Liga over the last two years and he has been capped five times for Portugal since making his international debut earlier this year.

Romano has revealed that Tottenham’s recruitment department is now having discussions on centre-back targets, with the 22-year-old being one of the names on their wishlist.

The journalist states that the deal would be a ‘complicated one’ for Spurs to complete in January, with the central defender having a release clause of €60m (£51.8m).

He explains that Sporting do not intend to let their academy graduate leave mid-season, which is why this might be a deal that the Lilywhites look to pursue next summer.

Romano further asserts that Tottenham are not expecting to spend big on a centre-back in January, given that Micky van de Ven is expected to be back in action in January.

Finally, he adds that Spurs are not the only ones eyeing Inacio, who is also on the radars of both Manchester United and Liverpool.

Inacio ticks a few boxes for Spurs, being quick, left-footed, young and quite aggressive. However, it is clear that Romero and Van de Ven are going to continue being Postecoglou’s first-choice pairing, which is why the club are likely to pursue a cheaper option as a backup.
