Report: Spurs eyeing move for Spain international as midfield reinforcement

Fichajes.net claim that Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a January move for Real Sociedad star Mikel Merino.

The report states that Spurs are looking for reinforcements in the middle of the park in January as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is expected to depart the club.

It is alleged that Merino is one of the names on the club’s radar, with the midfielder’s versatility and technical quality appealing to Ange Postecoglou.

Spurs looking at Mikel Merino as midfield signing

The 27-year-old, who previously had a brief spell in English football with Newcastle United, has gone from strength to strength over the last couple of years, having featured regularly for the Spanish national team.

The report claims Sociedad are expected to fight hard to keep Merino at the Reale Arena despite his contract with the club only having a little over 18 months left to run.

It is alleged that Tottenham could prize the player away if they are willing to put an offer of €50m (£43.2m) on the table.

While Hojbjerg looks likely to leave, Postecoglou will also be without Bissouma and Sarr for a couple of weeks in January due to AFCON.

So, even if Bentancur quickly returns to full fitness swiftly, Spurs will be short of options in the middle of the park and have no choice but to enter the market for a midfielder.
