Report: Spurs face competition from Newcastle for £142m midfielder

Tottenham have not given up on signing Philippe Coutinho this summer, however, Newcastle United are considered to be ahead of the North Londoners, according to France Football.

The report comes following claims from Spain suggesting Spurs would not pursue the Brazillian due to his high wage demands (Marca).

The French news outlet suggests that Spurs still hold an interest in the former Liverpool midfielder, however Newcastle United could be his most likely destination if their takeover goes through.

Coutinho’s representatives are said to be interested in the potential new project which the potential new owners of the Magpies could bring.

The Brazillian left Merseyside for Barcelona in 2018 in a deal which is believed to have been worth £142million (BBC).

However, Coutinho joined German side Bayern Munich in last summer on a season-long loan where he has featured 22 times in the Bundesliga (Transfermarkt).

The 27-year-old played in Bayern’s 3-1 Champions League victory over Spurs in December and scored with a stunning strike from the edge of the box.

We have been linked with the Brazillian for a while now, however, it has never really seemed a real possibility. Yet, with his future seemingly not at Barcelona a return to the Premier League could be on the cards but a move to Spurs would depend on his wage demands – which are likely to be exceptionally high.
