Report: Spurs face competition from up to 13 clubs for alleged summer target

Tottenham could face competition from up to 14 clubs for the signing of Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence, according to the Express.

Spence, who is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest, has made a good impression in the Midlands with a number of stellar displays in both the Championship and the FA Cup.

Spurs reportedly saw two bids for the 21-year-old rejected in the January transfer window, with Boro said to be keen on securing a fee worth a minimum of £15 million (ESPN).

But the failed bids could prove to be costly in Tottenham’s pursuit, with the Express reporting that ‘at least a dozen’ clubs have scouted Spence in recent months.

The report explains that names ranging from England, Spain and Germany are on the list of those chasing the wing-back, who is currently under contract at Middlesbrough until the summer of 2024.

It also suggests that Spence is weighing up his options ahead of next season, but would be open to a move abroad should the opportunity arise.

Spence has made 23 appearances in the Championship this term (Transfermarkt) and has helped Forest mount a strong push for promotion, putting them in contention for a potential playoff spot at the end of the season.

One of his most eye-catching displays came earlier this season in their 1-0 scalp over Arsenal in the FA Cup, to send the Gunners out of the competition at the third round stage.

Spence’s displays this season have put him firmly on the map for so many clubs, so Spurs may have their work cut out when it comes to signing him.

Ultimately, if they really want him, they will need to submit an offer good enough to tempt Middlesbrough that doesn’t undercut their demands.
