Report: Spurs face uphill battle to land Barcelona defender

Tottenham face an uphill battle to land Barcelona full-back Marc Cucurella this summer with reports from Spain indicating that Getafe are ready to trigger their option to buy the defender.

The left side of defence is one of the areas which Spurs could need to bolster this summer with Danny Rose’s future at the club looking uncertain (Telegraph).

Spanish radio station Cope (as relayed by transfermarkt) reported last month that Spurs had their eye on Cucurella, who is enjoying a fine season on-loan at Getafe.

Marca claim that versatile youngster, who can play both left-back as well as left-midfield, will be signed permanently by Getafe in the summer.

Getafe have a €6million (£5.5m) option to buy the 21-year-old at the end of the loan deal and the club are said to be keen on exercising the option in order to avoid the likes of Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal pursuing their interest in the Spanish Under-21 international (Goal).

Spurs Web Opinion

While Cucurella is fantastic going forward, the jury is still out on whether he is defensively good enough for the Premier League. Given the defensive demands on the left-back in Mourinho’s hybrid back three/back four system, I don’t believe the Spaniard will be a particularly good fit for us.
