Report: Spurs facing head to head battle with Serie A side to land right-back

According to a report from The Sunday People (as relayed by TBR Football), Tottenham Hotspur and Atalanta are battling it out for the signature of Benfica defender Tomas Tavares.

The 19-year-old has won several admirers since breaking into the Benfica side this season and is it is now claimed that he is attracting interest from across Europe.

Signing a right-back is reportedly one of Jose Mourinho’s priorities this summer (Football Insider), with Serge Aurier expected to follow Kyle Walker-Peters out of the door (Evening Standard).

Gedson Fernandes played as a right wing-back in Spurs’ 3-0 win over Ipswich Town on Saturday but it remains to be seen whether that was a temporary measure or something we are likely to see more of next season.

The Sunday People now reveal that Spurs have identified Tavares as an option and could be set to make a move for him. The report claims that the defender is valued at around £9 million by Benfica.

Although the youngster is also said to be attracting interest from Spain and France, the report asserts that it is likely to straight forward transfer battle between Spurs and Atalanta for the teenager’s signature.

Spurs Web Opinion:

Gedson showed on Saturday that he has the energy and the pace to play as a wing-back but the jury is still out on whether he is defensively good enough. If we sell Aurier, we ideally need to bring in two new right-backs. I suspect Jose wants to bring in one experienced option (Castagne or Celik) and one younger option like Aarons or Tavares.
