Report: Spurs failed in approach for defender prior to Alderweireld deal

Tottenham Hotspur confirmed last week that Toby Alderweireld had committed his future to the club by signing a new contract.

The Belgian put pen to paper on a new deal which will keep him at the Champions League finalists until 2023.

Football Insider report that Spurs were rebuffed in their approach of Ben Godfrey by Norwich City.

Spurs had been targeting alternatives to succeed Alderweireld if the 30-year-old had decided to walk away from the club at the end of the current season when his contract was due to expire.

The England Under-21 international established himself in Norwich’s Championship-winning side last season after joining the Canaries from York City in 2016.

The report claims that the Premier League newcomers made it clear to Tottenham that the defender will not be leaving the club during the January transfer window.

Spurs still face losing Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen at the end of the season unless either player follows Alderweireld by agreeing to a new deal.
