Report: Spurs focused on signing talented English players as backups this summer

Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are focused on bringing English talent through the door this summer.

Tottenham are near the limit for the number of foreign-born players allowed for European competitions but the arrival of Fraser Forster and the expected departures of some players this summer is expected to ease their concern.

Spurs are also set to hire Rangers’ chief scout Andy Scoulding (The Telegraph), with Football.London’s Alasdair Gold revealing that Fabio Paratici will lean on him when it comes to scouting British talent.

Reports over recent weeks indicated that the North London club are expected to accelerate a move for one up-and-coming English starlet in the form of Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence (Football Insider).

While reporting on Tottenham’s pursuit of Spence, Thomas has revealed that the Lilywhties are set to target more English talent in this summer’s window.

The journalist explained that Spurs want the incoming young talent to serve as backups this season and develop under their senior stars.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham have been liked with more up-and-coming talent from the Championship this summer than any window in the past.

However, the challenge in attracting the likes of Brennan Johnson, Keane Lewis-Potter or Alex Scott, would be in convincing them that there is a pathway to the first team in North London.

English youngsters these days are reluctant to move to top Premier League clubs and seem to prefer the Bundesliga as an avenue for their development.
