Report: Spurs handed boost in chase for starlet as Leeds United move stalls

Tottenham Hotspur may have been handed a boost in their reported pursuit of Wigan Athletic forward Joe Gelhardt, with the youngster’s proposed move to Leeds United said to have stalled.

Spurs have already completed the signing of Alfie Devine after Wigan went into administration, and Gelhardt is another one of the Latics’ youngsters the North Londoners are reportedly interested in (Daily Mail).

After impressing for Wigan’s academy set up, the 18-year-old has managed to break into the club’s first-team this season and has not looked out of place in the Championship.

It was reported last week that Leeds were the front-runners for the teenager’s signature. However, Leeds Live report that Marcelo Bielsa’s side are now much less optimistic about completing a deal for Gelhardt.

It is claimed that the Championship winners were confident of completing the deal last week after they negotiated a fee with Wigan and the youngster visited the club’s training ground

However, there has reportedly been no movement on the deal this week, with Wigan’s financial woes now said to be roping in Premier League clubs with bigger bids.

Given that the asking price for the forward seems to be around £1m, agreeing on a fee with Wigan should not really be that difficult. Gelhardt will probably make his decision based on where he feels he has the most realistic pathway to the first team. It is up to Tottenham to convince him that he will get the opportunity to make the step up if he shows the required quality and mentality.
