Tottenham Hotspur are one of four clubs who have asked Manchester City to keep them informed regarding the future of Kalvin Phillips, and will face competition from Brighton, Newcastle United, and Juventus.
Despite a squad boasting the likes of Yves Bissouma, Pape Sarr, and Rodrigo Bentancur, Ange Postecoglou will actually be without all three of those players throughout January due to injuries and international duty.
While Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp wait in the wings, it would seem Postecoglou is not quite content with his alternative options in the middle of the park, and a new central midfielder is thought to be on his wishlist for January.
A number of names have been linked with Spurs for that role, but one name that will not go away is that of Kalvin Phillips. The England international has not managed to establish himself at Manchester City since joining last summer.
It has been suggested that Spurs are one of the clubs interested in signing Phillips (Gazzetta dello Sport via Sport Witness), but they are expected to face competition for the 28-year-old.
Spurs want to be informed on Kalvin Phillips
Now, the latest from the Newcastle Chronicle has provided some details as to what kind of deal would allow Phillips to leave City, and names Spurs as one of four clubs monitoring the ongoing situation.
It is believed signing Phillips will not be a “cheap deal” for any club. Apparently, City will demand a £7.5m loan fee for the player if they cannot sell him, and will expect a “large proportion” of his £130,000 per week wages to be taken on, too.
Nevertheless, it is suggested Spurs—along with Newcastle, Juventus, and Brighton—have asked Phillips’ agent to keep them “in the loop” regarding any potential moves.
Spurs Web Opinion
I believe Kalvin Phillips is still a good player, though not quite as impressive as he was during his time at Leeds United. However, he just doesn’t strike me as the kind of player we are looking for—he’s not progressive enough with the ball and doesn’t have the dynamism Postecoglou likes in a midfielder.
