Report: Spurs have loan bid turned down for central midfielder

The Daily Star have claimed Tottenham Hotspur have had an offer turned down for Sporting midfielder Joao Palhinha.

Palhinha has been heavily linked with a move to Spurs this summer but it was initially alleged that Sporting Lisbon had no intention of letting him leave.

It was explained that Spurs had to trigger the €60m (£51.3m) release clause in Joao Palhinha’s contract if they had any hope of signing him.

However, reports from Portugal suggested last week that Sporting were coming around to the idea of cashing in on the 26-year-old.

The club reportedly need to raise funds through player sales in order to balance their books and had not received any suitable offers for the likes of Jovane Cabral, Nuno Mendes and Matheus Nunes.

The Daily Star has now revealed that Nuno Espirito Santo is keen to add another central midfielder to the squad amidst the uncertainty surrounding Tanguy Ndombele’s future.

The report reveals that Palhinha is one of the options on Tottenham’s radar but the club have seen their loan offer for the midfielder rejected by Sporting, who are allegedly demanding £34m.

It is asserted that Spurs are also eyeing Bayern Munich midfielder Corentin Tolisso as an alternative, with the French international thought to be valued at less than £10m.

Spurs Web Opinion

I am not convinced that Tottenham will be able to find a buyer for Ndomebel this summer. I cannot see Levy taking a massive hit on the £55m the club spent on the midfielder in 2019.

However, I cannot see anyone offering over £40m for the 24-year-old in the current financial climate. I also think the Frenchman’s salary will also be a huge hindrance to any potential transfer.
