Report: Spurs have opened talks with club over possible £17m January signing

Spanish outlet Todofijaches claim that Tottenham have opened talks with Ajax over the potential transfer of defender Jurrien Timber ahead of the January transfer window.

After coming through the ranks in Ajax’s famed academy, Timber made his first-team debut for the Dutch giants in March of last year before going on to make 30 appearances for the club last season.

The 20-year-old, who is comfortable playing in central defence and right-back, has also made a strong start to the new campaign with Erik Ten Hag’s side and reports emerged last week that Spurs are keeping tabs on the young defender.

However, it was suggested that Tottenham could face competition from the likes of Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Lyon, Monaco, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig for the Netherlands international’s signature.

If Todofijaches’s latest update is to be believed, Spurs have moved ahead of the competition by making the first move for Timber.

The report explains that Fabio Paratici is in talks with Ajax officials about the youngster ahead of the January transfer window. The Eredivisie club allegedly want £17m for Timber.

With three senior right-backs in the squad already, surely it would make little sense to sign Timber unless we are planning to offload one of them. It is starting to look like Matt Doherty’s time at the club is likely to come to an end sooner rather than later.
