Report: Spurs homegrown numbers explained ahead of January transfer window

Football.London have revealed that Tottenham are at their limit for the non-homegrown players allowed for the Champions League ahead of the January transfer window.

It is explained that Spurs have plenty of breathing space as far as the Premier League is concerned, with the competition’s rules being different to the Champions League with respect to homegrown players.

With Bryan Gil, Harvey White and Pape Matar Sarr being listed among the Under-21s, Spurs have just 14 non-homegrown players in the Premier League, which means they can sign two more players without having to sell anyone.

However, the rules for the Champions League are different, with Matt Doherty and Eric Dier considered non-homegrown as they spent their formative years in Ireland and Portugal respectively.

While Ben Davies is now considered homegrown in the Champions League after a recent tweak in the competition’s rules, Pape Matar Sarr and Bryan Gil have to be named in the non-homegrown list as they have not been at Tottenham for long enough to be included in the B list.

This means that Tottenham are at their absolute limit of non-homegrown players for the Champions League and would thus have to remove some players from the list to bring others through the door.

I am fairly certain that both Bryan Gil and Pape Mater Sarr will be loaned out in January. So Spurs should have no issues singing two non-homegrown players in January. Emerson Royal seems likely to be the other one to make way if Tottenham are planning on making a third signing next month.
