Report: Spurs hope to beat two PL clubs to the signing of Barcelona star

Mundo Depertivo report that Tottenham Hotspur have moved to open talks with Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele ahead of the January transfer window.

Barcelona spent a whopping £135m to snap up Dembele from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 but the winger has struggled to show consistency in his four and a half years at the Camp Nou.

The French international’s current contract runs out at the end of the season and 90min reported two months ago that Barca were having trouble extending his deal, with the likes of Spurs circling.

Mundo Depertivo have now explained that while the Catalan giants want to extend Dembele’s contract, they have offered him a new deal that would entail a reduction on his current salary.

Manchester United and Newcastle United have both allegedly made big offers to the 24-year-old amidst his contract situation.

The report claims that Spurs hope to beat out both Man Utd and Newcastle to Dembele, with the club’s managing director of football Fabio Paratici alleged to have tried to sign the former Dortmund man for Juventus in the past.

It is revealed that Tottenham have promised the winger a ‘lot of money’ and he will be a key part of their future project.

Finally, the report adds there is a feeling at Barcelona that Dembele’s agent is simply trying to buy time until January so that he can start talking to clubs abroad.

Spurs Web Opinion

Dembele’s talent has never been in question but there has been a lot made of his attitude problems at Barca, while his injury issues are also quite concerning.

The 24-year-old does not strike me as an Antonio Conte player as the Italian’s methods demand peak physical fitness while also requiring players to be tactically disciplined.
