Report: Spurs in discussions with Benfica over termination of loan deal

Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira has confirmed during his appearance on Portuguese television show Trio d’Ataque on RTP (as relayed by Record), that Benfica and Tottenham Hotspur are in talks over cutting short Gedson Fernandes’ loan deal.

The midfielder joined Spurs last January on an 18-month loan deal with an option to buy for £46m but he has not made the impact he would have hoped for in North London.

Gedson never really managed to get a sustained run in the side last season and he has now seemingly fallen further down the pecking order this campaign.

His only appearance for the Lilywhites to date came in the Carabao Cup fourth-round tie against Chelsea last month (transfermarkt.com).

The 21-year-old also failed to make the cut for Tottenham’s Europa League squad for the group stage, which has further reduced his chance of getting game time.

The Portugal Under-21 international has been backed to return to his parent club when the January transfer window opens.

Spurs Web Opinion

Fernandes has been unlucky not to have a consistent run in the side to show what he can do. However, in the few opportunities that have come his way, he has not done enough to stake his claim for a starting spot and show Mourinho that he deserves more opportunities.

Most Spurs fans would not complain if we were to cut his loan short and send him back to Benfica. However, unless we were to recall Skipp, that would leave us short of numbers in the central midfield area, which is why the speculation linking us with the likes of Brozovic and Phillips make sense.
