Report: Spurs ‘in first place’ to sign player Conte has worked with before

Tottenham are said to be leading the race to sign Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij, according to InterLive.it.

Netherlands international De Vrij is contracted with the Nerazzurri until the summer of 2023, but talks of fresh terms are currently not on the table (CalcioMercato).

FC Inter News reported earlier this week that Tottenham have put forward their interest in the 30-year-old and Spurs are the club that has made the most ‘powerful’ offer to date.

InterLive.it cements that claim, where it is stated that Spurs are ‘in first place’ to land the centre-back for Antonio Conte, who previously managed De Vrij at Inter.

The report states Conte is keen to secure a reunion in the Premier League, with the Italian seeing De Vrij as a guaranteed improvement for the Spurs defence.

However, the report goes on to state that Tottenham are accompanied by Barcelona who although are ‘distant’ in their interest, are ‘more motivated’ in securing a deal going forward.

De Vrij has continued to be an important regular for Serie A holders Inter, making 20 appearances this term including 18 starts (Transfermarkt).

Spurs Web Opinion

If Conte views De Vrij as an improvement on the defenders he currently has at his disposal, then Spurs should consider moving for him this summer. Even at his age, he won’t come cheap given he will have a year remaining on his contract. It is not guaranteed that Spurs would go for him either considering his profile.
