Report: Spurs in talks with Barcelona for defender ahead of deadline

Tottenham are keen on Barcelona full-back Emerson Royal and are trying to negotiate a deal to bring him to North London, according to Mike McGrath of The Telegraph.

The 22-year-old has been earmarked as a target for Spurs head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, who is looking to shore up his side’s depth in defence ahead of the transfer deadline.

Emerson first joined Barcelona in January 2019, but has spent the last two seasons at Real Betis, where he has refined his craft at right-back.

He played a vital role last season under former Manchester City and West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini, starting 34 games in La Liga to help Betis qualify for the Europa League.

The report from The Telegraph claims Spurs have taken an interest in the Brazilian international, and could make an attempt to bring him in on an initial loan before the August 31 deadline.

Spurs are in the process of making space within the squad which includes attempting to sell Serge Aurier, who the club has been actively attempting to move on this summer.

Nuno has entrusted academy graduate Japhet Tanganga as his starting right-back to begin the season, while Matt Doherty has been deployed as a back up option.

With Spurs actively trying to sell Aurier in this transfer window, they will need another option on the right side if he does go. Emerson has been gradually establishing himself as a reliable figure for Betis over the last couple of seasons, and he will still have plenty of room to improve at his age.
