Report: Spurs in talks with defender over a possible new contract

The Daily Mail have reported that Tottenham are now in talks with Jan Vertonghen over a new contract at the North London club.

This comes as the Belgian’s current deal is set to run out in the summer of 2020, which would see him leave on a free and potentially sign a pre-contract agreement with another club in January.

It appears that Daniel Levy does not want to let this happen, but is only willing to offer the central defender a short-term deal due to his 32-years of age.

Vertonghen missed out on the first few games of the season but has been a regular in Pochettino’s starting XI ever since.

Jan is now in his eighth season at the club, being one of the most experienced players in the entire squad.

The Mail claim that 30-year-old Sissoko’s new four-year deal may act as a bargaining chip for Vertonghen to get a longer contract.

Spurs Web Opinion

Vertonghen has been one of our most consistent performers since Pochettino took over in 2014. While a couple of his performances have been below par this season, there is no reason to believe that he has begun to deteriorate owing to his age. There were signs against Southampton that he was returning to his usual self.
