Report: Spurs ‘increasingly confident’ of signing 29-year-old this summer

Tottenham are confident of signing West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and plan to initially use him as an understudy for Hugo Lloris, according to The Sun.

Johnstone is out of contract with the Baggies this summer and is at risk of leaving the club as a free agent come the end of term.

Southampton have long been named as an interested party in the 29-year-old (Hampshire Live), though may need to fend off the likes of Tottenham to secure his signature.

And The Sun now report that Spurs have grown in confidence about sealing a deal, with plenty of optimism brewing regarding the England international siding with them this summer.

Interestingly, the report mentions that Spurs view Johnstone as an ‘initial back-up’ to current number one Lloris – who signed a two-year extension in January – but believe he could succeed the French captain down the line.

Current understudy Pierluigi Gollini has deputised in place of Lloris on just 10 occasions this season (Transfermarkt) but has failed to inspire confidence with his displays.

The 26-year-old, who joined on loan from Atalanta, is reportedly set to return to Italy at the end of the season having grown frustrated with his lack of game time (Citta Celeste).

Spurs Web Opinion

Johnstone would be an adequate back-up for Lloris, considering how underwhelming Gollini has been at times this season.

The interesting bit is the fact Spurs believe he could step in place of Lloris long-term, which doesn’t inspire too much confidence given he isn’t exactly a top calibre goalkeeper.
