Report: Spurs initially wanted 21-year-old before moving to Adama Traore

The Times have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur only turned their attentions to Adama Traore after they found a deal for Brighton’s Tariq Laptey to be unfeasible.

According to Football Insider, Traore is expected to be Tottenham’s first signing of the January transfer window after the North London club agreed on a fee with Wolves for the pacy winger.

The report alleges that Antonio Conte wants to employ the 25-year-old as a right wing-back in his system at Spurs.

One other right-back who was previously rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar was Lamptey, who has won several admirers since making his move to Brighton two years ago.

The 21-year-old was linked with a move to Tottenham last summer but it was revealed at the time that he was valued at £50m by the Seagulls (The Daily Mail).

FourFourTwo reported three weeks ago that Spurs were competing with their North London rivals Arsenal for the England Under-21 international’s signature.

The Times have now revealed that Lamptey was indeed one of the options on Tottenham’s radar this month.

However, the report explains that Antonio Conte’s men found a deal for the Brighton star to be ‘too expensive’ and thus shifted their attention to Traore instead.

Spurs Web Opinion

Lamptey might have been the better fit for the right wing-back role and arguably has a higher ceiling than Traore.

However, I am excited to see what the Spaniard would be able to offer from the right wing-back role should his move to Spurs go through.

The Wolves man would add a different dimension to our attack and would make us better at breaking down teams who defend with a low block.
