Alleged Spurs ‘insider’ John Wenham has revealed to Football Insider that Tottenham have released young midfielder Axel Piesold, claiming the decision is somewhat bemusing.
The 16-year-old originally joined Spurs at Under-8 level and progressed up the ladder through the club’s youth system.
However, an injury last season caused him to miss out on the majority of the 2020/21 campaign, which will have stunted his development.
It has been reported by Wenham that Spurs have released Piesold early into his scholarship deal without making the Under-18 squad at all this season, although the club has not yet confirmed the departure.
The decision has left Wenham a little confused with regards to its timing, labelling it as ‘slightly strange’.
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “I was told he has been released.
“I noticed he hasn’t made a single match-day squad not just in the Under-18s season but in the summer friendlies as well.
“For whatever reason, it hasn’t worked out for him. It is slightly strange to see Tottenham make that move in November.
“I was actually told he was released a couple of weeks ago. It could be that Tottenham want to give him the chance to find a new club before July.”
He added: “At the end of the day, there is no point in keeping a player who isn’t going to play.
“It was only a couple of years ago he was competing in Under-14s tournaments all over the world. He was winning player of the tournament awards I seem to remember.
“So it shows how a few injuries can change the course of a player’s future. I wish him all the best.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Spurs don’t usually provide too many updates regarding the youth set-up below Under-18 level, but it was apparent that Piesold was not going to have a future at Spurs, and it was good that the club recognised that to allow him to leave.
