Report: Spurs installed as front runners for Barcelona midfielder this summer

Tottenham Hotspur are now said to be leading the race to sign Ivan Rakitic after moving ahead of the competition for the Croatian midfielder’s signature, according to the latest reports from Spain.

Mundo Deportivo reported late last month that Rakitic was assessing his options ahead of a possible summer move after falling out of favour at the Camp Nou following the arrival of Frenkie de Jong from Ajax.

The same publication now reports that the 32-year-old is one of the players Barcelona are planning to sell this summer in order to raise transfer funds.

It is revealed that Juventus have dialled back their interest in the midfielder while his former club Sevilla can’t afford him, despite wanting to bring him back to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

The report also asserts that Rakitic would be interested in the prospect of moving to London and linking up with Jose Mourinho.

It is also mentioned that Barcelona ‘like’ Tanguy Ndombele very much but a possibility of a swap deal with Rakitic is not suggested as a strong possibility.

Spurs Web Opinion

I cannot see where Rakitic will fit into the Spurs side, especially if Tanguy Ndombele stays, as we are not short of creative midfielders at the moment. With the likes of Ndombele, Gedson, Lo Celso, Winks, Dele and Lamela all capable of playing a similar role to Rakitic, our priority should be to get a defensive midfielder in.
