Report: Spurs interested in £21m-rated midfielder but have PL competition

Tottenham are one of a host of Premier League clubs interested in Roma midfielder Jordan Veretout, according to CalcioMercato.

Spurs were said to have kept tabs on Veretout throughout the January transfer window (Il Messaggero) as they looked to strengthen the midfield options at Antonio Conte’s disposal.

However, a move never came to fruition which meant the 28-year-old would stay with the Giallorossi for the rest of the season.

Despite Veretout featuring prominently for Roma this term, CalcioMercato claim talks of a new contract for the Frenchman have been put on hold due to poor recent performances, which could open the door to a sale in the summer.

The report states Tottenham have retained their interest, but are being rivalled by other Premier League sides as well as Ligue 1 clubs for the midfielder, who is valued at around €25 million (£21m) by Roma.

Veretout has made 31 appearances in all competitions for Jose Mourinho’s side this season, registering four goals and six assists in the process (Transfermarkt).

Veretout just doesn’t strike as an option that would drastically improve Tottenham’s quality in midfield. The fact Roma have delayed talks of a new contract due to his performances could also be a cause for concern and a red flag too.
