Report: Spurs interested in Danish international but not thought to be their ‘first choice’

Tottenham Hotspur have an interest in Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard, but have not made an approach to sign him, according to The Athletic.

The central defender has been in impressive form during Denmark’s Euro 2020 campaign which saw them reach the semi-final before being eliminated by England.

Vestergaard has twelve months left on his current contract at St Mary’s and despite Tottenham’s interest, he is not said to be the North Londoners first choice to bolster their defence.

The 28-year-old has also caught the eye of former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho who is keen to take him to AS Roma, however Vestergaard’s preference is to remain in the Premier League.

Tottenham are reported to be in the market for a new defender this summer after experiencing a season where Mourinho decided to chop and change his defensive pairing (Daily Mail).

Vestergaard was impressive for Denmark during Euro 2020, but lacks the raw pace we need from a defender to help bail out those around hm – especially if paired with Eric Dier.
