Report: Spurs interested in signing South American striker with Aston Villa also keen

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing River Plate striker Julian Alvarez, but face competition for his signature, according to CalcioMercato.

The 21-year-old has scored 23 goals in 85 appearances across all competitions for the Argentinean giants (transfermarkt).

Alvarez has already scored seven goals in 11 matches this season and found the back of the net twice in last weekend’s 2-1 victory against fierce rivals Boca Juniors.

Spurs are said to be up against Aston Villa and Bundesliga pair Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund in their attempt to bring him to the Premier League.

Alvarez is out of contract in December of next year with TyC Sports having claimed that the player is set to be River’s “next big sale”.

Tottenham are currently without a secondary striker to either provide cover for Harry Kane or act as a partner, having failed to make Carlos Vinicius’ loan move from Benfica permanent.

Vinicius claimed earlier this week that Spurs were keen to take him on a permanent basis and has since joined PSV Eindhoven on loan (Zero Zero).

Tottenham certainly need to bring in another forward to bolster their attacking options and help take the goalscoring burden firmly off the shoulders of Harry Kane.

Dusan Vlahovic would be a shrewd signing, however is likely to cost a significant amount more than what Alvarez would.
