Report: Spurs join the race to sign experienced Croatian playmaker from La Liga

Tottenham Hotspur have now registered an interest in Barcelona midfielder, Ivan Rakitic, according to reports from Spain.

Rakitic has been an outstanding servant for Barcelona since joining from Sevilla in the summer of 2014 but he has seen himself relegated to a bit-part role this season after the arrival of Frenkie De Jong from Ajax.

Barcelona had attempted to use Rakitic as a makeweight in a proposed deal to sign Neymar from PSG last summer and the midfielder was said to be disheartened when he found out (Daily Mail).

Mundo Deportivo now reports that the 32-year-old is ready to quit the Camp Nou this summer but wants to assess his options before making a decision.

It is said that Tottenham have now entered the race for the wantaway midfielder, with Jose Mourinho keen on bringing him to North London.

The report asserts that Spurs face competition from Sevilla, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, and Napoli for the Croatian international’s signature this summer.

I highly doubt whether there is any truth to this rumour. While Rakitic’s work ethic and tactical discipline make him a good fit for Jose’s teams, we don’t really need a midfielder of his profile this summer. What we need is a ball-winner in midfield to allow the likes of Ndombele, Winks, and Lo Celso to play.
