Report: Spurs keen on right-back they attempted to sign in 2018

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keen on landing RB Leipzig defender Nordi Mukiele.

L’Equipe (23/04/20, page 7 – as relayed by GFFN) report that the defender’s performance against the Lilywhites in the Champions League made a real impression on the club.

It is claimed that Spurs have already established contact with the player’s representatives in the hope of bringing him to North London.

Spurs are said to be up against Atletico Madrid (L’Equipe via GFFN) and PSG (Le10Sport) in a bid to secure the 22-year-old’s signature this summer.

However, it turns out that Tottenham could have landed Mukiele for just £14million two years ago.

Le10 Sport reported back in 2018 that Tottenham were working hard to secure the signing of Mukiele from Montpellier.

The young defender was instead snapped up by Leipzig for £14m (L’Equipe), while Tottenham chose to stick with both Serge Aurier and Kieran Trippier that summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

I can see why the club would be interested in a move for Mikiele this summer as his versatility allow him to cover for both right-back and centre-back. It will save us some money and allow us to invest our transfer kitty on a defensive midfielder and a centre-forward.

If Spurs had acted with more conviction in 2018, perhaps the Frenchman could have already established himself as an important part of our backline.
