Report: Spurs keen on snapping up Man City man this summer

According to a report in The Telegraph (as relayed by TBR Football), Tottenham Hotspur are one of the leading contenders to sign John Stones this summer as the centre-back looks set to leave the Etihad stadium.

Stones never really hit the expected heights at Manchester City after joining from Everton for £50 million back in 2016.

The centre-back has now dropped down Pep Guardiola’s pecking order with the Spaniard failing to name Stones on the bench for three of City’s first five games since the restart.

The City boss has admitted that he will sit down for talks with the 26-year-old at the end of the season (Evening Standard).

Spurs are expected to be in the market for a central defender this summer, with Jan Vertonghen reportedly on his way out of North London (Football Insider).

The Telegraph claim that Stones is one of the players the Lilywhites are eyeing ahead of the summer transfer window, with the defender having just two years to run on his contract with City.

It is asserted that Tottenham would need to beat out competition from both Arsenal and Everton to sign the England international this summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

I am completely unconvinced by this rumour and suspect that it has been fueled by Stones’ agent. The City defender certainly does not fit the profile of centre-halves that Jose usually likes. There are simply too many question marks about his decision making and his ability to dominate first balls against powerful strikers. Stones does get tend to be bullied on occasion and I genuinely don’t see him being much of an upgrade over Juan Foyth, who is arguably better on the ball than the 26-year-old.
