Report: Spurs keen to tie down player to new deal after previously being open to offers

Eric Dier is set to be handed a new deal by Tottenham after the club had a change of heart regarding their initial plan to put the 26-year-old up for sale, Football Insider now reports.

Dier initially found himself out of favour under Mauricio Pochettino at the start of the season after being riddled with injuries and illness during the campaign.

He was reinstated back into Tottenham’s midfield after the arrival of Jose Mourinho in November but his performances soon started levelling off.

The England international was then used at centre-back by the Spurs head coach, a position that Dier feels suits him best (Evening Standard).

Football Insider now reports that Spurs hierarchy were initially planning on listening to offers for the player who was yesterday charged by the FA for confronting a fan following the FA Cup defeat against Norwich last month (BBC).

However, it is said that they have now changed their mind after the coronavirus crisis hit as it will cost over £30million to replace him.

The North Londoners are now said to be keen on extending the stay of the former Sporting Lisbon man, who will be out of contract in the summer of 2021 and will look to begin talks over a contract extensin.

Spurs Web Opinion

While Spurs might have considered selling Dier last summer, I don’t believe the club entertained the thought after the arrival of Jose Mourinho. I believe Dier has all the attributes to be a top centre-back.

Some fans have really short memories as they forget how good he was at centre-back in his first season, as well in the 2016/17 season when we played with three at the back on many occasions.
