Report: Spurs keeping tabs on goalkeeper with ‘Neuer vibe’

European football expert Kevin Hatchard has told talkSPORT that Tottenham Hotspur have identified Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nubel as a potential target next summer.

The club are said to be keen on adding another goalkeeper to their squad and the 23-year-old German stopper has reportedly impressed them.

Nubel only became a regular for the Schalke in the second half of last season but has since put in stellar displays between the sticks and earned rave reviews.

Despite being so young, he was appointed as the club’s captain at the start of this campaign, thus drawing comparisons with legendary goalkeeper Manuel Nuer, who also came through the ranks at Schalke before making the move to Bayern Munich in 2011.

Hatchard confirmed that the youngster’s contract with the Gelsenkirchen based club runs out at the end of the current campaign and that Spurs are monitoring the situation closely.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Hatchard said, “One little whisper that came my way on Spurs in the last few days is that they are keeping an eye on Alexander Nubel.

“He is the captain of Schalke and a goalkeeper in his early 20s. He is a very good goalkeeper with a [Manuel] Neuer vibe about him. He’s good with his feet, commanding, and he’s got a bit of arrogance about him which I don’t think is a terrible thing.

“He is out of contract at the end of the season and hasn’t signed a new one yet. He was linked very strongly with Bayern, but the problem is Neuer is still there. So is he going to go to Bayern and sit on the bench? I don’t think he is.

“Spurs were linked with him in the summer and my understanding is they are keeping an eye on what is going on in that situation.”

Spurs Web Opinion

With Lloris’ only having a few more years left in him at the top level, it does make sense for Tottenham to be on the lookout for the Frenchman’s long term replacement. While Paulo Gazzaniga has done well whenever he has got opportunities, I don’t believe he is quite good enough to be a regular for a Champions League club.
