Report: Spurs knocked back Everton transfer approach for one main reason

Paulo Gazzaniga has found himself having fallen down the goalkeeping pecking order at Tottenham Hotspur this season.

The Argentine found himself playing regularly in the Spurs first team last season after Hugo Lloris dislocated his elbow in the 3-0 defeat at Brighton at the start of October (Spurs official).

Following the arrival of Joe Hart this summer, Gazzaniga has not featured for Mourinho’s side while Hart has had two outings in the Europa League qualifying stages (transfermarkt).

The Telegraph claim that Everton were keen to sign the 28-year-old before the transfer window closed on Monday night, only for Tottenham to block the prospect of him moving to Goodison Park.

The Toffees were said to be in the market in order to provide competition for Jordan Pickford, who has struggled with form.

Spurs are said to consider Everton a serious rival for a place in the top four of the Premier League and did not want to strengthen a rival club in their quest of returning to the Champions League.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side currently occupy top spot in the table after winning all four of their opening top flight matches, including the 1-0 victory at Spurs on the opening day of the campaign.
