Report: Spurs-linked centre-back signs new contract with his current club

RB Leipzig have confirmed that the rumoured Tottenham target Mohamed Simakan has now signed a new contract with the club.

Spurs fans will only be too aware of the increasing amount of speculation linking Josko Gvardiol with a move to the North London club over recent months.

Antonio Conte’s men are thought to remain keen on the Croat and are allegedly facing competition from Chelsea for the 20-year-old’s signature ahead of the January transfer window (Tuttosport).

However, Gvardiol was not the only Leipzig defender who is thought to be on Tottenham’s radar, with his centre-back partner Simakan also being mooted as a target for the Lilywhites.

Fabrizio Romano said on his YouTube channel last month that Spurs tried to sign the Frenchman in the summer but were priced out of a move for the player.

He added that the Premier League club are continuing to keep an eye on the 22-year-old, having sent scouts to Germany to watch him this season.

However, Tottenham’s hopes of Simakan now appear to be over, with Leipzig confirming that the former Strasbourg man has put pen to paper on a five-year deal at the Red Bull Arena.

Spurs Web Opinion

A defender of Simakan’s profile, who can play across the back three was arguably a bigger priority for Tottenham in January than someone like Gvardiol, given that Conte has two capable options at left centre-back.

I have no doubt that Conte will want to sign a central defender to cover for the right centre-back and central sweeper roles. The Italian appeared to lose faith in Davinson Sanchez as evidenced by the fact that he played Dier on the right and Lenglet through the middle when Romero was out injured.
