Report: Spurs-linked defender having medical ahead of Arsenal move

Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu, who was linked heavily with a move to Tottenham earlier this summer, is having his medical ahead of completing a transfer to Arsenal, The Athletic have revealed.

Tottenham have seemingly won the race to sign Barcelona right-back Emerson Royal, who is coming off two impressive campaigns at Real Betis.

If reports are to be believed, Arsenal too expressed an interest in the Brazilian but the player rejected their advances in favour of a move to the Lilywhites.

However, before Spurs made a move for Emerson, it was Tomiyasu who was rumoured to be Fabio Paratici’s number one right-back target.

Tottenham’s decision to move for the Barca man has opened the door for their North London rivals to agree on a deal for Tomiyasu.

The Athletic now claim that the Gunners have agreed on a fee of £16m plus bonuses with Bologna for the Japanese international, who is having his medical in Italy before finalising his move to the Emirates.

However, the report does add that Tomiyasu’s move to Arsenal is dependent on other player exits at the club before this evening’s deadline.

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham absolutely did the right thing by passing up on Tomiysu and going for a more attacking profile of right-back in Emerson.

Tanganga has demonstrated in the first three games that he is capable of playing the defensive right-back/right-centre-back in a back three role.

It does not appear as if Nuno trusts Doherty and so Emerson will give the Portuguese coach a potent wing-back option on the right if he chooses to deploy a back three. The Brazilian is also good enough defensively to play as a right-back in a back four.
