Report: Spurs-linked player to sign new deal with Real Madrid

According to Marca, Luka Modric, who has been linked with a return to Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window has agreed in principle to sign a new contract to keep him at Real Madrid until the end of next season.

Modric had four brilliant seasons at Spurs before Jose Mourinho, who was managing Real Madrid at the time, took him to the Santiago Bernabeau in 2012.

The Croatian international will go down as one of the best players in Real Madrid’s history, having helped the club to four Champions League titles and numerous other trophies in the eight and a half years he has spent there so far.

The 35-year-old’s contract was due to expire in June 2021 and El Chiringuito TV (as relayed by The Express) reported earlier this month that Mourinho had contacted him about a potential return to Spurs.

However, Marca claim that the veteran is now set to sign a one-year contract extension with Real Madrid that will see him stay at the club until June 2022.

The report suggests that Modric turned down offers from Qatar and the MLS to commit his future with Los Blancos.

Spurs Web Opinion

Even at 35 years of age, I thought Modric would have been a brilliant addition to our squad, especially given the level he still seems to be playing at. We lack a player like him in the middle of the park with the ability to recycle the ball and help us hold on the possession.

Winks has not quite developed into the player that Spurs fans would have hoped for and so, I would not be surprised if Mourinho looks to dip into the market in January to sign a centre midfielder capable of dictating games.
