Report: Spurs lose out in race for experienced playmaker as La Liga club seal deal

Rumoured Tottenham Hotspur target and Barcelona star Ivan Rakitic has now officially sealed a return to Sevilla.

It was previously reported that the Croatian international was looking for an exit route after falling down the pecking order at the Camp Nou, with Spurs and Arsenal both keen on snapping him up (Daily Mail).

Sport even reported recently that Jose Mourinho was a big fan of the 32-year-old and believed signing him was a ‘no brainer’ for Spurs.

However, Spanish football journalist, Guillem Balague had insisted that a return to Seville remained the midfielder’s preference.

It now appears that Rakitic has got his wish as he has officially sealed a return to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, six years after leaving the club to join Barcelona.

Sevilla confirmed that the experienced midfielder has put pen to paper on a four-year contract with the club.

Spurs Web Opinion

It was not surprising to see us being linked with Rakitic given that Jose has waxed lyrical about the Croatian in the past. While it is possible that considered making a move for him, I suspect he was not anything more than a potential fall-back option in case we could not get our first-choice targets in. I still expect us to sign a central midfielder or an attacking midfielder this summer as I believe Ndombele will be sold.
