Report: Spurs man has postponed talks over a contract renewal for now

Calciomercato have claimed that Antonio Conte has pushed back talks over a contract renewal at Tottenham until January.

Conte’s current contract at Tottenham runs out at the end of the season but the North London club have an option to extend his deal by another 12 months (The Athletic).

Over the last week, speculation from Italy has suggested that the Spurs head coach is a candidate to take over at Juventus next summer.

Italian journalist Paolo Bargiggia claimed last Thursday that Juve could look to replace Massimiliano Allegri with Conte at the end of the 2022/23 season.

The report even claimed that the 53-year-old is open to returning to the Allianz Stadium, which is why he has not renewed his deal with Spurs.

This was followed by a report in CalcioMercato last Friday, which suggested that despite being happy in London, the Tottenham head coach would ‘do more than reflect’ if the Serie A giants come calling for him next summer.

The same publication has now offered an update on Conte’s future, stating that the former Inter boss does not want to discuss a contract renewal with the Lilywhites until January.

It is explained that this is because he wants to understand Tottenham’s plans for next summer and also wants to see if a ‘door opens’ to return to Juventus.

Spurs Web Opinion

Conte might not renew until next summer in order to put pressure on the Tottenham hierarchy to back him again next summer. That is how the Italian has tended to operate in many of his jobs.

However, the 53-year-old seems completely committed to his project at Spurs at the moment, and I do not think he would return to Juve if he is backed up by the Premier League club.
