Report: Spurs may have to take financial hit on player who nearly left for £13m in the summer

Tottenham could be forced to reduce their asking price for midfielder Victor Wanyama after failing to find a buyer at their £9million asking price claim the Evening Standard.

Wanyama came close to a move away from Spurs in the summer according to several reports (Football Insider) but ended up remaining in North London.

He has barely seen any game time so far this campaign and Jose Mourinho is reportedly given the green light to sell the defender this window.

The report in the Evening Standard claims that Spurs wanted £17 million for Wanyama in the summer but ended up agreeing a £13 million fee with Belgian side Club Brugge, only for the Kenyan to reject the move.

It is suggested that the Lilywhites have almost halved their asking price and have been looking for £9million for him this month but no club is prepared to pay that amount.

The report reveals that two unnamed Premier League clubs have already enquired about the midfielder’s availability this month but it is suggested that Daniel Levy has to reduce Wanyama’s valuation further if he hopes to sell him before the close of the transfer window.

Wanyama’s reported wage of £62,000-a-week is said to be causing an issue for some clubs with Celtic manager Neil Lennon recently admitting he would like to bring him back to Scotland but doubted a deal could be reached due to financial reasons (Herald Scotland).

Spurs Web Opinion

We made a huge mistake by failing to get rid of the likes of Wanyama and Eriksen back in the summer as we would have been able to get a bigger transfer fee six months ago. With clubs knowing that we have no choice but to get rid of some deadwood this month, they can afford to play the waiting game and land them on a cut-price deal.
