Report: Spurs may not offer former Ajax man a new contract

Tottenham Hotspur have three key players who will find themselves out of contract at the end of the current campaign.

Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen are all within a year of being able to walk away from the club as free agents.

A report from Football Insider claims that Mauricio Pochettino is unsure whether to offer Jan Vertonghen a new deal to extend his stay in North London.

The Spurs boss is said to have become concerned about the level of performances of the 32-year-old this season.

Vertonghen found himself dropped from the match day squad for the Premier League opener against Aston Villa and has also been named among the substitutes for the next two matches.

The Tottenham backroom staff are looking for a significant improvement in performances from the central defender before they are prepared to allow him to put pen to paper.

The former Ajax player has been one of Tottenham’s most consistent performers in recent seasons and had one of his best matches when he was asked to play at left-back in the Champions League home tie against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

Opinion

To potentially lose both Alderweireld and Vertonghen for free next summer would be a baffling decision by the Tottenham hierarchy. At 32, Vertonghen still has plenty to offer Tottenham.
