Report: Spurs may still keep defensive star after Italian club give up on pursuit

Tottenham Hotspur will want to hang onto their best central defenders this summer ahead of the new Premier League season, which is under a month away.

With Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Juan Foyth, and Davinson Sanchez, they only really have four senior centre-backs, with Eric Dier, Ben Davies, Cameron Carter-Vickers and others able to cover.

However, after Tottenham extended Alderweireld’s contract by an extra year back in early 2019, they also triggered a rather low release clause of £25m (Guardian).

A recent report by Sky Sports indicated that Italian giants Roma were interested in meeting this clause before the new season starts.

The clause runs until July 26, which would give Roma roughly two weeks to get the deal done.

However, Football Italia now report that Roma have given up hope on the deal, as the money would have to be paid in full before August and Alderweireld is said to want a lot of money himself.

Spurs fans will now be hoping that this means Toby will be staying for another season, if not longer.
