Report: Spurs midfielder set for first appearance of the season against Colchester

Tottenham begin their League Cup campaign away to Colchester United later this evening as they attempt to put their 2-1 defeat to Leicester on Saturday behind them.

It has been a poor start to the season for Mauricio Pochettino’s men, who have only won 2 of their opening six Premier League fixtures and are yet to win away from home in any competition.

That is one stat they will be hoping to put right when they take to the field at the JobServe Community Stadium this evening. Tottenham are in the middle of a busy fixture list and Pochettino is expected to ring the changes for the tie.

The Telegraph report that Eric Dier will be handed his first start of the season after being on the bench for most of Spurs games this campaign. The 25-year-old’s last appearance for Spurs was when he came on as a substitute in the Champions League final.

The publication quotes Pochettino as having said about Dier, “It has been difficult [for Dier]. Of course, it is tough for him.

“He has to wait through training and then, of course, he has the opportunity. He has to try to fight for his place.

“We have a big squad, I need to take the decision performance by performance. The plan is the plan. We are going to assess the player and then make the decision.”

The report also claims that Dele Alli will also feature in the game after failing to make the matchday squad against Leicester.

Spurs Web Opinion

After strengthening this summer, Tottenham now have a genuinely deep squad and so several players have seen very little football so far. It will be good for the likes of Eric Dier, Dele Alli, Victor Wanyama, Ben Davies and Lucas Moura to get some game time under their belt as the manager would want them to be sharp to perform when they are called upon.
