Report: Spurs missed out on £54m-rated defender for just £2m back in 2016

If recent reports are to be believed, Manchester United have shifted their attention to signing RB Leipzig defender, Dayot Upamecano who has been rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar in the past.

Upamecano has had a terrific season and is one of a number of players in Julian Nagelsmann’s side whose reputation has blossomed with German outfit’s impressive run in the Champions League last season which included a 4-0 aggregate win over Spurs in the round of sixteen stage.

The Red Devils have now been established as the favourites for the central defender’s signature with a €60m (£53.7m) fee being touted recently (ESPN).

Tottenham were credited with heavy interest in the 21-year-old a couple of months ago, with Jose Mourinho said to be a fan of the centre back  (Don Balon).

According to a report in talkSPORT, Spurs could have signed Upamecano as a 16-year-old for £2million back in 2015 but passed up the opportunity to do so.

It is claimed that the Frenchman had been identified as an outstanding prospect by Spurs’ scouting network as a youngster but it was Red Bull Salzburg who won the race for his signature.

Given how much the Leipzig star is now reported to be worth, the Lilywhites must surely regret missing out on him all those years ago.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given his age, Upamecano could potentially be a mainstay in a team’s defence for the next ten years. So, I am not surprised about the high asking price that is being reported in the press. The 21-year-old was rumoured to be on our radar until a few months ago but the speculation has died down since he signed a contract extension with Leipzig. It seems as if we have turned our attentions elsewhere.
