Report: Spurs mull over move for Manchester City player

According to a report by Spanish news outlet El Desmarque, Tottenham head coach Jose Mourinho is keen to bring Manchester City full-back Joao Cancelo to the club this month.

The report claims that Mourinho has already spoken to the defender about the possibility to swapping Manchester for North London.

The 25-year-old right-back is said to be unhappy at the lack of game time at the Premier League champions this season after finding himself behind former Spur, Kyle Walker in the pecking order at the Etihad.

It is said that Cancelo’s place in Portugal’s squad for Euros is under threat with Ricardo Pereira and Nelson Semedo competing with him for the right-back berth.

The report also suggests that Mourinho is unconvinced by Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters and would like to bring his compatriot to the club to bolster his defence.

Walker-Peters has been linked with a move to Crystal Palace this month with Roy Hodgson confirming the Eagles’ interest in the Spurs defender (Football.London).

Barcelona are also eyeing Cancelo but it is said that Spurs are currently the front runners for his signature.

Spurs Web Opinion

Given the hybrid back three/back four that Mourinho likes to employ that requires one of the full-backs to essentially play as a winger when in possession, Cancelo would be a perfect fit for Spurs. He would certainly offer more going forward than Aurier. However, I doubt City would entertain the prospect of selling him permanently.
