Report: Spurs not planning on signing a central defender this summer

While several members of the Spurs squad have been linked with moves away from the club, no player’s future has been subject to more speculation over the last year than Toby Alderweireld’s .

The 30-year-old reportedly has a release clause of £25 million (The Guardian) in his contract and has thus been linked with several clubs this summer (The Mirror).

Recently, reports in Italy suggest that the Belgian international is interesting AS Roma, who are in need of reinforcements in central defence (Corriere dello Sport).

Now, a report in The Daily Express asserts that Tottenham do not plan on signing a central defender this summer as things stand. The report claims that the Lilywhites are focused on landing Giovani Lo Celso, Dani Ceballos and Ryan Sessegnon for the moment.

However, it is suggested that their plans could change as Spurs might be forced into action and get a defender if Alderweireld leaves the club.

Earlier today, HLN journalist Kristof Terreur claimed that Tottenham will only sanction a deal to sell the former Southampton man of his transfer is completed at least 14 days prior to the close of the transfer window.

Spurs Web Opinion

With Jan Vertonghen, Davinson Sanchez, Juan Foyth all capable of playing in the position, and Eric Dier and Ben Davies capable of filling in, Spurs are pretty well stocked in the position. However, we at Spurs Web believe it would be prudent of the club to hold on to the Belgian for at least one more season.
