Report: Spurs not prepared to meet transfer release clause for defensive midfielder

Sporting have made it clear that they have no interest in negotiating with clubs over the exit of midfielder João Palhinha this summer.

Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã have claimed that an interested party would have to trigger his €60m (£51.2m) release clause if they want to secure his services.

The report names Tottenham as an interested party, but claim that the North Londoners are not prepared to shell out the money that Sporting expect to receive.

Record have also been linked with a move for the 26-year-old, while there are also admirers in La Liga in the form of Atletico Madrid and Sevilla.

He operated in a defensive midfield role with Sporting last season, making 38 appearances in all competitions (transfermarkt).

Palhinha was impressive for Portugal in Euro 2020 and his arrival in North London would likely signal the end of Harry Winks’ Spurs career, however in the current financial climate it seems unlikely that Spurs will be prepared pay such a hefty amount.
