Report: Spurs not willing to trigger midfielder’s £26m release clause

CaclioMercato have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have registered a firm interest in signing Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini but the North Londoners are not willing to activate the midfielder’s release clause.

While fixing Tottenham’s backline is reportedly Fabio Paratici’s priority this summer, the Italian is also said to be looking to add a central midfielder to the squad.

Pellegrini is one of the midfielders rumoured to be on Tottenham’s radar but reports from Italy claimed last week that Roma were resisting Spurs’ advances for the 25-year-old.

CaclioMercato have now explained that the Italian international, who is now into the final 12 months of his deal at the Stadio Olympico, is no closer to penning a new deal.

It is explained that Jose Mourinho’s men are said to be focusing on incomings for the moment and intend to postpone contract talks with the midfielder until September.

The report alleges that staying with the Giallorossi is Pellegrini’s preferred choice but a move away from the club cannot be ruled out.

Paratici is reportedly keen on bringing the Roma star to Spurs but it is asserted that the Lilywhites are not willing to meet the €30m release clause (£25.7m) in the midfielder’s contract which expires in 10 days.

If Tottenham do hold a serious inters in Pellegrini, one would think that the club would activate his release clause rather than waiting for it to expire, unless Paratici already knows that the midfielder will not sign a new deal at Roma.
