Report: Spurs now in ‘front row’ to sign 21-year-old despite ‘fierce competition’

According to Calciomercato.it, Tottenham Hotspur have now moved to the front of the queue to sign Bologna’s Riccardo Calafiori, overtaking the host of Serie A sides that are queuing up for the centre-back.

The January transfer window might have only closed a week ago but if reports from Italy over recent days are to be believed, several sides around Europe have already started plotting summer moves for Calafiori.

The 21-yea-rold has been a revelation since his switch from Basel to Bologna last summer and it was reported by Oggi Sport Notizie earlier this week that Spurs and Juve are expected to battle it out for the youngster’s services.

Tottenham have competition for Riccardo Calafiori

However, CalcioMercato have now revealed that more Italian clubs have now taken notice of Calafiori and have now expressed an interest.

It is explained that the Old Lay have been joined in the queue by Napoli and AC Milan while Inter Milan have also launched an inquiry into the Italy Under-21 international’s availability.

However, the publication adds that Tottenham are currently in the ‘front row’ to land Calafiori, who is expected to cost between €16m-€20m (£13.6m-£17m) next summer.

Spurs Web Opinion

I expect Bologna to demand well over £20m for Calafiori next summer, particularly given that the centre-back looks destined for a call-up to the senior Italy squad.

If he becomes a starter for Luciano Spalletti going into next summer’s Euros, the 24-year-old’s market value will shoot up substantially.
