Report: Spurs offered to play Rennes in France to fulfil final Conference League game

According to PA Sport’s Jonathan Veal, Tottenham offered to play their final Europa Conference League game against Rennes in France to avoid further fixture problems, and requested the postponement of this week’s fixture against Leicester to do so.

Tottenham’s final match in Group G was called off last week after the club was hit by an outbreak of COVID-19, which caused eight first-team players to produce positive tests.

Visitors Rennes travelled to London the same day the postponement was made official by UEFA, however, were frustrated by a ‘lack of fair play’ and transparency from Spurs.

With the status of the fixture still in limbo, Spurs have since been searching for a way to reschedule the game, but are having trouble doing so with the club’s fixture schedule full until the beginning of January.

However, it has been said that Antonio Conte’s side requested to postpone Thursday’s Premier League encounter against Leicester in order to fulfil the Rennes fixture this week instead.

It has also been claimed that Spurs have also offered to play the fixture in France purely to find a feasible date in time to fully complete the group.

Spurs are sitting third in Group G three points behind Vitesse Arnhem, knowing a win would leapfrog the Dutch side into the final qualification spot.

Both sides were included in Monday’s draw from the knockout and play-off round, with Austrian outfit Rapid Vienna waiting in the wings over who their next opponent will be.

The entire situation is a big headache for the clubs involved as well as organisers UEFA, and it is tough to see how this game will be played in the allocated time. But one thing we do know is there will be at least one party that will be aggrieved with whatever decision happens going forward.
