Report: Spurs one of four to show interest in England international ahead of January

TEAMtalk have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur are one of four clubs to show interest in snapping up West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone in January.

Johnstone’s contract at the Hawthorns runs out at the end of the campaign and it was previously reported that the North Londoners had identified the Baggies goalkeeper as a potential long-term successor to Hugo Lloris.

According to reports over recent weeks, Spurs are now expected to offer Lloris a contract extension and are hopeful of striking an agreement with their captain.

However, if TEAMtalk’s latest update is to be believed, Tottenham are still interested in Johnstone and are thought to be considering a January move for the 28-year-old.

The report claims the England international has been informed by West Brom that they would consider bids for him in January as he would be able to leave as a free agent in the summer.

Johnstone is said to be keen on a return to the Premier League in order to keep himself in Gareth Southgate’s thoughts.

It is alleged that Spurs are facing competition from Newcastle and West Ham for the Baggies number one ahead of the January transfer window.

The report also adds that Rangers are keen on Johnstone and the Scottish club could even offer him a pre-contract in January.

Now that Lloris looks likely to stay, the only possible reason Spurs could be interested in Johnstone is to potentially snap him up as Hugo’s understudy.

It might be that Conte and his coaching staff are not convinced by Pierluigi Gollini. However, Johnstone would likely want guaranteed first-team football at his next club.
