Report: Spurs out of race for midfielder despite being ‘very close’ to signing recently

Tottenham Hotspur have still yet to sign a single player in the past 16 months, despite reports claiming they were ‘very close’ to securing one last week.

Portuguese publication, Record, reported that Spurs were close to signing Sporting Lisbon attacking midfielder Bruno Fernandes.

The report claimed that Fernandes was set to snub the likes of Man United, Liverpool, and Man City to play for Spurs next season.

In fact, it went as far to say that Tottenham had already put in a bid for the player, along with United, but Spurs’ Champions League status was more of a draw.

However, The Daily Mail have now revealed that Tottenham have ruled out a move for the playmaker, with Lisbon demanding around £50m for him.

With Man City having already dropped out of the race for the 24-year-old this week, the report names Man United as the new favourites to scoop him up.

Fernandes racked up 32 goals and 18 assists last season for Sporting, but it doesn’t look as if he’ll be opening his Tottenham account any time soon.

Spurs Web Opinion:

It is nice to see Spurs linked with some exciting players, but the Fernandes close to signing reports always seemed a little too good to be true. Especially with the future of Eriksen still unknown, I can’t see Spurs signing a playmaker any time soon.
